The Ancient Gene

Ancient technology only obeys someone who carries the Ancient gene. Sit in the Control Chair without it and nothing happens.

Born with it

About one player in 25 is born with the gene and keeps it for life, through death as well. Most natural carriers are weak; now and then one is as strong as anyone gets.

Checking it: the Ancient Scanner

Use the scanner to scan yourself, or use it on another player to scan them. It tells whether the gene is there, how strong it is, and whether it came from therapy.

One hangs on a wall in the Ancient Outpost, and it can also be crafted.

Getting it: ATA Gene Therapy

Everyone else can take the gene from a syringe.

  • Hold the syringe down to inject. A dose takes in a little under half of the attempts and gives a weaker gene, never above 60%.
  • A therapy gene fades by one percent every two in-game days, until another dose is needed.
  • Anyone who already carries the gene keeps the syringe.
  • A used dose leaves its Empty Syringe behind, ready to be filled again.

Making it

  1. Craft Empty Syringes and an ATA Reagent.

  2. Put the reagent in a brewing stand over up to three empty syringes, like a potion. They fill with therapy.
