The DHD and Addresses
The Dial Home Device is the console you dial on. This page explains what an address is, how to read one, and how to type it in.
What an address is
Every gate has its own address: a row of symbols called glyphs. Each glyph is a small star pattern, and each has a name you can read by hovering it in chat.
Right-click a finished gate's controller and its address shows up in chat. That click also copies the address, so you can paste it into a DHD or an address card straight away.
How to read one
An address written in chat looks like this:
- Six glyphs pick out the gate.
- The seventh (dashed above) is the symbol of the gate's galaxy. Inside your own galaxy you leave it out.
When you dial, you add one more symbol at the end: the point of origin, the symbol of the gate you are standing at. It is always the last key before the dome. So a normal dial is:
Placing a DHD
- Place it within 16 blocks of the gate. It speaks for the gate it finds.
- Its keys face you. Right-click it from behind to open its back panel: one slot for a ZPM and three slots for control crystals.
- It needs a Master Control Crystal in its master slot. Without one the DHD is dead stone.

Dialing
Make sure the gate has power (Powering a Gate) and that nobody stands in front of it.
Right-click the DHD from the front to open its keyboard.
Press the six glyphs of the address, in order. Each one locks a chevron on the gate.
Press the point of origin. It locks the last chevron, but only if the address leads to a real gate.
Press the big dome in the middle. The wormhole opens.
To close a wormhole, press the dome again. Only the gate that dialed can close it.
A Milky Way DHD has 39 keys; a Pegasus DHD has 36. Each DHD only speaks to a gate of its own kind, but you can paste any address into either: it is turned into that DHD's glyphs.
The address card
An Address Card keeps up to ten named addresses. Hold it while you open a DHD to pick one, and the DHD guides you through the dial.
- Right-click with the card to open it. Copy an address from chat and press Ctrl+V to write it down, then give it a name.
- Each address can be copied back out or wiped.
- Craft a written card with a sheet of paper to get a copy of it.

Other worlds and galaxies
- Another world of the same galaxy (Abydos, the Nether, the End, or a world a datapack adds): no extra crystal, but the gate takes four times the energy.
- Another galaxy: the DHD needs an Intergalactic Crystal. Dial six glyphs, then the other galaxy's symbol, then the point of origin: eight chevrons, and forty times the energy, paid by zero point modules only. By default the Overworld lies in the Milky Way; other galaxies come with datapacks and addons.
When a dial fails
A failed dial sounds, lets the chevrons go and says why. Right-click the controller to read the last failure again.
| Why | What to do |
|---|---|
| No gate answers that address | Check the address: six glyphs, then the point of origin. |
| A gate cannot dial itself | You typed this gate's own address. |
| A gate is busy | One of the two gates already has a wormhole open or is dialing. Wait. |
| The gate is not fully built | A piece of the ring is missing. |
| Too many wormholes are open | The server allows only a few at once. Wait for one to close. |
| Not enough energy, or the power failed | See Powering a Gate. |
| Only zero point modules reach another galaxy | Put a ZPM in the DHD, use a ZPM hub, or dial from the control chair. |
| Something blocks the far gate | Nobody is sent into a wall: clear the space in front of the far gate. |
| The far gate did not answer | It is gone, or could not be reached. |
| The voltage is too high | A GregTech cable brings a higher voltage than the gate accepts. |
